Flying weavings II
When visiting La Paz Bolivia, it is hard to coincide with artist Gastón Ugalde because he is usually at the Uyuni Salt Flats, one of the driest places on earth with a stark landscape of blue skies over an infinite white earth made entirely of salt. Uyuni is Gastón´s natural open studio and a white canvas where he explores his eternal love affair with this land. Artist, lover and warrior are words used to describe himself. His work is multidisciplinary and expands over fifty years and different media covering performance, painting, sculpture, installation, land-art, photography and printmaking.
Bolivian landscapes, the Andes, the Amazon and the valleys, are his inspiration, “for me the landscape is everything, it invades it all and I want to poses it”, the Uyuni Salt Flats specifically represent the possibility of living on the edge, like living in death, he says. How does he envision the future: “using Chinese 3D printers”.? “I see myself making large land art interventions”. “It is important for me to cover geographic territories…transforming the landscape with minimal use of materials.”
